Leo del 290, a band made up of Jason Escobar (pictured) and Emilio Galvan, freshmen, and Chris Guerra, senior, perform in front of an energetic crowd at the Fine Arts Festival. The group performed “El Guero” and “Quiero Ser”. “It was an intense, whimsical time, I loved it because I wanted to show my pride of being Latino and to show off my talent,” Escobar said. After the end of the performance, the crowd began chanting “otra”, asking the band to play another song.

Soaring above the audience, five fellow singers support May Tran, sophomore, during the climax of “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” from the film, “Dirty Dancing”, sung by the high school’s treble chorus. Having previously performed a duet with Larissa Bates, sophomore, the year prior, Tran didn’t know what to expect from her classmates hoisting her into the air. “At first, I wasn’t very used to it. And I didn’t really know what to do at first; do I sing? Do I not sing?” Tran said.

As vice president of Music Club, she struggled alongside her fellow officers throughout the process and its accompanying difficulties. “Although we started the process of creating a club earlier in the month of May, we were rejected as a club because we didn’t provide enough specific information and details of our goals and opportunities. The process of being approved took way longer than expected, however, we were able to get the club approved in the end,” Christina Duong, senior and secretary of Music Club, said.

Robert Hinman, freshman, exits the lunchroom accompanied by an upperclassman, Brisa Rosas, sophomore. Entering from Cook Middle School, he’s already accustomed to how these procedures affect every aspect of student life, from tardies to dress code to lanyards. “The students may think they’re silly or stupid rules, but they’re on board. We try to explain to them that it's all about safety. The good thing is, kids see the reason and have an urgency to get to class on time. Students need to be in class from bell to bell, especially the students that struggle and miss the very beginning of instruction,” Angela Williams, assistant principal, said.

From April 17th to the 20th, the high school’s robotics club, Jersey Voltage, competed at the World Championships for First Robotic Competition (FRC) and prevailed to the division finals. They placed second place with a record of 12-4-0 in the Galileo division making a radical victory for themselves in comparison to previous years. Candace Asmus, senior, performs a hula hoop routine to the song “Yes Indeed” by rapper Drake. The crowd cheered as Asmus performed the routine which included many moves and sang along to the song. Asmus performed the routine many times throughout the day, which caused much buzz around the school.

Beloved coach and teacher, Crystal Day has been named the 2019 Teacher of the Year. She has received praise from her students and colleagues. “Coach Day not only cares about her students, but she puts the students and staff before herself. She instills great role model tendencies about her students but wears so many hats to accommodate the students and staff here at Jersey Village. Coach Day is a coach at times, a mentor to students and staff, another to us all, and most of all a wonderful colleague that I can call a friend. She is great at what she does, and so deserving of this award at least ten times or more,” Tamara Collier, girls basketball coach said.

Also, it feels nice to know an expert care enough to take time out of his day to pass down his knowledge and experience to the younger generation,” Lamas said.

She assisted with odd jobs and errands, which ranged from placing important papers in envelopes for the children’s parents to distributing mail and supplies to the teachers.
