“A budget tells us what we cant afford, but it dosen’t keep us from buying it”. The famous quote from William Feather can apply to many students in America right now. This article is about whether or not schools should be free for all students.
Did you know that the national public school meal debt is 262 million dollars a year. 30 million students cant afford their school meals. Oddly enough, this issue has not been changed after 30 years of sufficiency and suffering. However, the community of Jersey Village High School has had some interesting takes on what should be done.
“I believe CFISD should survey and ask what students want in relation to the meals” replied local senior O’Tondre Bibbs. Not only does this speaks volumes on how little CFISD cares about student opinions, but it also provides some insight into how students feel about the issue. Another thing Bibbs addressed was the lack of “diversity” pertaining to school meals. This was backed up by another student, Nathaniel, who is a junior.
While the students of Jersey Village gave us great visualization of the CFISD meal system, the staff were even more detailed! One interviewee was very passionate about the topic. He made sure to answer every question enthusiastically. Most notably when I asked him about his personal experience regarding school meals. Lobesack replied with “The pizza was good… before Michelle Obama ruined it”. Art teacher, Chelsea Dilliard, basically agreed with this claim in another interview. Dilliard also spoke about the district problem with funding cafeteria food. All in all, it seems the staff along with students see eye to eye on this particular issue.
The information gathered during this study proves that school meals should absolutely be free. Hopefully in the future this issue can be resolved. Future students will most likely appreciate the fight for this cause.
