Did you know that 93% of school districts have dress codes or policies on what students wear to school and that 90% ban clothing associated with girls? That’s actually pretty sexist and shows how the dress code is enforced more on female students rather than male students, according to the article “Schools Dress Code Debates, Explained”.
Did you know that some teachers have actually dress-coded just because their own beliefs are against it? Junior Emely Perla stated how a teacher that was a different race dress coded her, and she feels that she pushed her own beliefs on her because she was wearing biker shorts and as she states, “no clothing is distracting as long as you are not showing anything inappropriate.” Just because your own beliefs are something different doesn’t mean you have to push that over on someone else.
Even though many people think that mainly girls are the ones that end up getting dress coded it actually does happen to males as well. Freshman student athlete Alexander Tovar stated “ I actually have been dress-coded and it was because my shorts were a bit above my knees”. so yes even males have been stopped and been told to change. Even him as a male student states how he “ does not get distracted by clothes I focus on myself and my work”.
On the other hand, lots of teachers just enforce the dress code just because it’s their job and they have to, like Coach Stengar, who is not only a coach but also a teacher at Jersey Village High School. He states how he enforces dress code because it’s his job but also he’s not 100% sure with everything because he stated, “ I don’t see a problem with wearing a cap” there is really certain rules that sometimes we just don’t see a point in because even he said, “I don’t think that’ll distract anyone”. Research has shown that “59% have rules about hair/hairstyles”.
However there will always be someone against others thoughts, not everyone is going to agree on something and everything will be okay. Of Course there’s always going to be a second opinion to something. Assistant Principal Mr.Abitua at Jersey Village High School believes that the dress code should be even stricter than it is right now. He also stated “ Uniform would be a good idea that way everyone looks the same and we don’t have to worry about someone being out of the dress code and you also won’t have to worry about picking out different outfits”. There could be counter arguments against this statement but many can also agree.
Assistant Principal Mr.Scott believes that the rules are the same for both boys and girls. The same rules apply. He stated how “It’s the same concept for both if you’re a girl you can’t wear a crop top and if you’re a boy that wants to wear one you can’t wear one as well. “Same rules apply” as he stated he believes that no one is targeted, the same rules apply for both. It just may seem like more rules because “girls may have more violations”.
On the other hand many girls believe how they feel targeted and discriminated against based on body types. Also on the way that boys think Junior Estefany Abrego stated how “boys think wrong” This is one of the main reasons why we have certain rules that we have. She also believes how at times the teachers “do too much” she believes yes certain rules
In conclusion girls or anyone really should be stopped from their education just to be told to change. We should not worry so much about what someone wears if it’s not showing anything inappropriate, and stop sexualizing girls for wearing “revealing” clothes. Girls should not have to worry about whether or not someone is going to think wrong just because of an outfit they chose to wear.
